How to care for peonies in a vase so the bouquet lasts longer and opens beautifully

How to Cut Peonies for a Vase
Peonies for a vase should be cut with a sharp knife or secateurs at an angle of about 45°. This helps the stem absorb water better and prevents it from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase.
Do not break the stems by hand or cut them with blunt scissors. If the cut is crushed, water moves through the stem worse and the bouquet may wilt faster.
Best care routine:
- after delivery, refresh the cut by 1–2 cm;
- later, cut peonies only when needed, not every day;
- usually refreshing the cut every 2–3 days is enough;
- if the stem end becomes slimy or dark, refresh the cut earlier;
- for regular care, cutting off 0.5–1 cm is enough, not a large piece every time.
There is no need to cut 2 cm off peonies every day. After a few days, the stems will become too short and the bouquet will lose its shape. The goal is to maintain a clean fresh cut through which the flower can drink water properly.
The best cut for peonies is clean, diagonal, about 45°, and made with a sharp tool.
How Much Water Peonies Need in a Vase
Peonies do not need a vase filled to the top. It is enough for the stems to be submerged by about one third to one half of the vase height. If the vase is tall, there can be more water, but cleanliness matters more than the exact amount.
Only stems should be in the water. Leaves, petals or small pieces of greenery quickly pollute it. This makes bacteria multiply faster and shortens the life of the bouquet.
If the water level drops, add clean water. If the water becomes cloudy or smells unpleasant, replace it completely and wash the vase.
What to Add to Water for Peonies

Do not use Domestos, toilet gels, scented bleach or products with additional household chemicals. Never mix bleach with vinegar, citric acid, ammonia, detergents or any other additives.

Where to Place a Peony Bouquet
Peonies like a cool environment. In warmth, the buds open faster, but the bouquet also lasts less. If you place peonies on a sunny windowsill or near a heater, they may open beautifully in one day but lose their shape sooner.
Do not place the bouquet:
- in direct sun;
- near a radiator, heater or oven;
- under an air conditioner;
- in a draft;
- next to fruit;
- in a very warm room overnight.
Fruit, especially apples, bananas and peaches, releases ethylene. It speeds up the aging of cut flowers, so it is better not to place a vase with peonies next to a fruit bowl.
Daily Care for a Peony Bouquet
Peonies do not need complicated care, but they do need regular attention. Most often, a bouquet wilts quickly not because the flowers are poor quality, but because of dirty water, leaves in the vase or too warm a place.
Daily care is simple:
- check the water level and clarity;
- remove petals or leaves that have fallen into the vase;
- if the water is cloudy, replace it;
- wash the vase before adding fresh water;
- refresh the cut if the stems are slimy or have not been cut for a while;
- return the bouquet to a cool place.
If there is flower food in the water, follow its instruction. But if the water loses clarity, do not wait for a “scheduled” change — refresh it right away.
How to Help Peony Buds Open
Peonies can open in a vase if the buds are already mature: they have color, are not fully green and feel slightly soft to the touch. If a bud is very hard, green and was cut too early, it may not open fully even with proper care.
In bouquets from a flower shop, this happens less often because florists usually choose peonies at the right stage: not fully open, but ready to open. “Stone-hard” buds are more common with home-cut or market peonies that were cut too early.
To help peonies open:
- refresh the cut at an angle;
- place the stems in slightly warm water for a few hours;
- keep the bouquet in a bright but not hot spot;
- do not place the flowers in direct sun;
- very gently massage the bud near the base of the petals if it is tight.
The massage must be delicate. Do not force the bud open with your hands, pull the petals apart or squeeze the flower. A light movement near the base of the bud is enough to loosen the outer petals slightly.
Some peonies naturally feel a little sticky. If a bud seems “stuck”, you can gently moisten the outer petals with clean room-temperature water and give the flower time. Do not rub the petals or remove them by force.
Why Peonies Wilt Quickly
If peonies lose freshness quickly, the reason is usually the conditions after delivery.
Common mistakes:
- the bouquet was placed in an unwashed vase;
- leaves remained below the waterline;
- stems were not cut after delivery;
