How to give flowers: Etiquette and common mistakes
To give flowers thoughtfully, you do not need to memorize a secret meaning for every color and number. A suitable bouquet should reflect the recipient, the occasion and the way it will be presented: whether the flowers will be carried for a long time, whether a vase will be available and whether a large arrangement will be awkward at a restaurant or during a walk. Below are BuketLand’s practical recommendations for giving flowers in person or arranging a delivery in Ukraine.
In brief: present a bouquet with the flowers facing upward; remove the protective transport sleeve but usually keep the decorative wrapping in place; and when ordering a celebration bouquet with countable stems in Ukraine, choose an odd number. In a mixed designer arrangement, overall balance and proportions matter more than a number the recipient cannot clearly see.
How to present flowers in person
Before the meeting, check that the decorative paper has not been crushed and that the water pack is not leaking. Hold the bouquet with the stems pointing down and the flowers facing upward. There is no need to hide it behind your back or give a long explanation of what every flower is supposed to mean.
After greeting the recipient, offer the bouquet so it is easy to take by the lower stems or the wrapped handle. A few sincere words are enough. If you are visiting someone at home, it is considerate to suggest putting the flowers in water straight away.
Should you remove the bouquet wrapping?
It depends on the purpose of the wrapping:
A protective plastic sleeve or transport paper shields the flowers from wind, cold, dust and accidental damage. Remove this outer layer before presenting the bouquet when the weather and setting allow.
Decorative paper, ribbon or florist mesh is part of the design and helps maintain the shape of the bouquet. It normally stays in place during the presentation and can be removed by the recipient before the flowers go into a vase.
A water pack or floral foam supplies the flowers with water. Do not remove it during transport; the next care steps depend on the type of arrangement.
Florist’s tip: if you are unsure which type of wrapping you are looking at, check whether it defines the silhouette of the bouquet. Neatly fitted paper and ribbon are usually part of the design, while a loose clear sleeve over them is transport protection.
How many flowers should you give in Ukraine?
In Ukraine, an odd number is traditionally chosen for a celebratory bouquet when the stems can be counted easily. Even numbers are culturally associated with funeral flowers, so an odd number is the customary choice for a birthday, date or congratulatory gift.
Florists count stems, not individual buds. A spray rose or chrysanthemum stem may carry several blooms, but it still counts as one stem in the order. In a large mixed bouquet with greenery, filler flowers and branching stems, the exact number may not be visually apparent, so shape and balance become more important.
The appropriate flower count depends on the intended scale of the gift, not on a supposed secret code:
1 flower can be a thoughtful minimalist gift if the stem is fresh, substantial and visually striking;
3, 5 or 7 stems make a compact bouquet that is easy to carry during a meeting;
9, 11, 15, 21 or 25 stems create more volume for a birthday or another important occasion;
51 or 101 flowers make a major statement, so their weight, transport and the size of the vase should be considered in advance.
The same number of stems does not always produce the same size: seven hydrangea stems and seven tulips create very different volumes. When ordering, it is therefore useful to specify both the number of stems and the preferred size — compact, medium or large.
Numbers such as 3, 5, 7 and 9 are sometimes assigned individual meanings, but there is no universal dictionary for this symbolism. The recipient is far more likely to notice freshness, color, shape and attention to their preferences.
How many flowers should you give a woman?
There is no single correct number. One striking flower or a small bouquet of 3–7 stems is easy to carry on a first date or a walk. A birthday or anniversary may call for a fuller arrangement. Knowing which flowers and colors she likes is more useful than trying to express feelings through a number.
How many roses can you give?
The same odd-number tradition applies to roses in Ukraine. You can give 13 roses: thirteen is an odd number, so it does not break Ukrainian flower-giving etiquette. The exception is a recipient who personally dislikes the number 13. If you want a large bouquet close to a round number, choose 49 or 51 roses rather than 50 for a celebratory gift in Ukraine.
How many flowers should you give for a birthday?
Choose an odd number for a birthday when the bouquet consists of individually counted stems. Matching the number of flowers to the recipient’s age is not necessary: it can make the bouquet impractical or result in an even number. It is better to decide on the desired size, budget and the recipient’s favorite flowers.

The BuketLand method: five questions before ordering
When discussing an order, we consider more than color and budget. These five questions help prevent a beautiful bouquet from becoming inconvenient at the moment it is presented.
1. Who will receive the flowers?
Think beyond the person’s age or status. Consider their actual preferences: favorite colors, sensitivity to highly fragrant flowers and whether they prefer minimalist mono-bouquets or full mixed arrangements. Personal taste is more reliable than rules such as “dark flowers for men” or “pastels for young women.”
2. Where will the flowers be presented?
A large bouquet can work well at home if an appropriate vase is available. In an office, the arrangement should not take over the entire desk. At a restaurant, theater or during a walk, choose something that is easy to hold and transport safely.
3. How long will the flowers be without water?
If the recipient has a long journey ahead, ask the florist to add a water pack or suggest an arrangement made with floral foam. Even very fresh flowers can suffer when kept without water for too long or exposed to heat or freezing weather.
4. What will the recipient do with the bouquet next?
After the presentation, the recipient may return to work, travel by public transport, attend a concert or continue walking around the city. Size and weight matter: the largest bouquet is not always the most considerate choice.
5. What should the gift communicate?
A romantic declaration, thank-you, message of support and formal congratulations call for different tones. Color, shape, the card message and the delivery method can express that tone without relying on rigid “flower language.”
BuketLand’s practical rule: decide on the presentation scenario first, then the bouquet’s size and construction, and only then select the flower varieties. This order helps create an arrangement that is not only attractive in a photo but also convenient for the recipient.
How to apply the method: flowers for a restaurant meeting
If the flowers will remain without a vase for several hours after they are presented, a large bouquet may be inconvenient even when the budget allows it. A compact bouquet, an arrangement with a water pack or flowers in a hat box will be more practical. If the bouquet is delivered to the recipient’s home before dinner, a larger arrangement may be entirely suitable. The same occasion can require a different bouquet depending on what the recipient will do afterward.
Choosing flowers for different situations
For a partner or loved one, follow their preferences. Red rose bouquets are not the only romantic option: seasonal flowers, a soft mixed arrangement or the recipient’s favorite variety may feel more personal.
For a man, there are no mandatory colors or shapes. A vertical or graphic arrangement with sturdy stems and restrained wrapping can be a practical option, but the person’s taste and the occasion remain the deciding factors.
For a child, choose a lightweight bouquet without sharp or loose decorative elements. Remember that the child may want to hold it without help.
For an office, hospital or another institution, choose an arrangement that is easy to place and check the access rules in advance. For a hospital, also confirm whether fresh flowers are allowed and whether there are restrictions on fragrance or size. If the gift is from a team, identify the senders on the card.
Do flower colors and symbolism matter?
Red flowers are often viewed as romantic, white flowers as formal or delicate, and yellow flowers as sunny and cheerful. These are associations, not prohibitions. A yellow bouquet does not automatically signify separation, and white flowers are not reserved for weddings.
If you know the recipient’s favorite color, use it as your main guide. If you do not, consider the occasion, season and setting, or ask the florist to suggest several color palettes. This creates a personal choice rather than one based on superstition.
How to arrange courier delivery
With flower delivery, the presentation plan matters as much as the bouquet. Provide the date, preferred delivery window, full address, recipient’s phone number and access details such as the entrance, floor, hospital department, company name or restaurant. If a phone call could spoil the surprise, mention this when placing the order.
In BuketLand’s experience, surprises are more likely to be disrupted by an incomplete address, an absent recipient or restricted building access than by the bouquet itself. This is why the manager confirms both the arrangement and the handover conditions. If the exact address is unknown, it can be confirmed discreetly with the recipient without revealing what is being delivered.
A photo of the completed order before dispatch is useful. Check the overall shape, palette, wrapping and card. If a seasonal substitution changes the color or character of the arrangement, it should be approved before the courier leaves.
For an anonymous delivery, the sender’s name is not disclosed. The recipient must still be identifiable, so the manager needs accurate contact details; a neutral unsigned message can be added to the bouquet. Current conditions and delivery windows are available on the Delivery page.
Four common flower-giving mistakes
Following stereotypes instead of the recipient’s preferences. Age, gender and popular “flower language” reveal less about someone’s taste than their favorite colors and varieties.
Choosing the size before considering the presentation. A large bouquet may be inconvenient at a theater, restaurant, on public transport or during a walk.
Confusing transport protection with decorative wrapping. Remove the outer protective layer, but keep the wrapping that supports the bouquet’s shape during the presentation.
Planning the bouquet but not the delivery. An incomplete address, closed office, security desk or poorly timed phone call can spoil the surprise more than substituting one flower variety.
Frequently asked questions
Can you give flowers one day before a birthday?
Yes, if meeting on the birthday itself is not possible. It is better to say directly that this is an early birthday gift rather than pretend the date is different. For courier delivery, confirm that the recipient will be at the address and able to put the flowers in water.
Can you regift flowers?
Regifting a bouquet that was chosen especially for you may upset the original giver. However, passing still-fresh flowers to an older relative, a neighbor or an institution instead of throwing them away can be reasonable, particularly when you explain the situation honestly.
In the BuketLand catalog, you can choose a flower bouquet, explore flowers for her, find birthday bouquets or view flowers for men. If you are deciding between several options, tell the manager the occasion, presentation setting, preferred colors and budget — that is enough information to suggest suitable arrangements.
This guide is based on common customer questions and BuketLand’s experience coordinating in-person, courier and anonymous flower presentations in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. The recommendations describe contemporary everyday etiquette in Ukraine; cultural expectations about flower counts and presentation may differ in other countries.
